My name is Noah Pauwels I am 24 years old and live in Belgium. I came to Korea for 5 months from September 2024 until January 2025 to study the Korean language. I came to study the language because I really love the culture, and I want to be able to use this in my life. I really adore the country, people and the nature, it’s my 2nd time visiting. I have also already planned my return soon in September 2025. Traveling is one of my passions, so I have travelled to a lot of different countries, but South Korea has been my favorite so far. The 5 months I lived in South Korea I stayed in Gyeonggi-do Guri-si a city on the outskirts of Seoul. At first I thought it was going to be difficult to travel into Seoul everyday but I was surprised that the Subway connections in Korea are so easy and convenient. Contrary of Belgium the subway and trains are almost always on time and the busses have a regular shedule. This is very different from Belgium where the trains are never on time with lots of delays which can take hours. I did find it challenging to figure out the different types of busses in Seoul but after figuring out the system it was really easy to get around the city fast. In Korea, public transportation is also incredibly affordable. I had to pay a small fee every 30 days to use a climate card, but during that time, I had unrestricted access to practically all of Seoul's bus and metro lines. Continuing about affordability Korea in general is much cheaper then Europe. For example when you go to a small restaurant in Europe you have to pay easily 30 to 40 € (50,000 – 60,000 ₩) for a simple meal which is quiet a lot. I frequently had to pay less than half of that while I was in Korea. Regarding the food this is also very different as in Belgium, for example: In Korea they eat rice with every dish in Belgium we don’t, we usually eat potatoes with most of our dishes. The dishes in Belgium are not spicy at all compared to Korea most dishes are extremely spicy especially if you are not used to that spice level. For me the spice level took a while to get used too. Additionally, I really enjoy Korean restaurants since they are quite diverse and I favor the variety of side dishes they serve. In my experience, living costs in Korea are really low for foreigners. Aside from fruit, which might occasionally cost the same or slightly more, grocery shopping is incredibly inexpensive when compared to Belgium. Not only while buying food but also when shopping for clothes are there big differences. I bought so many clothes I had to take an extra suitcase back home. The prices for clothes are sometimes only half of what I would pay in Belgium. Also for shoes I bought new running shoes for 20 € (30,000 ₩ ) in Korea the same shoes would have been 70€ in Belgium. The same can also be said about famous branded cloths they are also cheaper not by much but sometimes up to 10%. When purchasing K-pop merchandise, I also noticed that the prices varied. As an avid fan of K-pop, I typically spend 50,000 ₩ on albums back home, but I spend about 20,000 ₩ here. I can confidently state that Korea is less expensive than Belgium. Because prices are so low, it's really nice to be able to purchase what we want and satisfy our own desires without worrying about going over budget. Korea is a very interesting country and i would recommend everyone to visit it once in their life. Full name is Noah Pauwels Email: noah.pauwels@hotmail.com
