글·사진 야스민 롬니(미국 유타주) 번역 지은진(홈스테이 매니저) [원문] My Amazing Korean Experience I arrived at the Incheon International Airport during the Fall of 2023 for the first time not really knowing the amazing adventure I was about to embark on. Even though the reason I went to Korea, which was to attend a language school for four weeks, didn’t work out as well as I expected, that situation didn’t really get in the way of a wonderful experience that left me wanting more. Fortunately, I was invited to a wedding, so I returned to Korea six months later. When I’m asked what I like the most about Korea, all I can say is everything: the amazing people, the rich history, the food, the tourist attractions, the traditional markets (I love shopping), the natural scenery … and the list goes on and on. I was blessed with the opportunity to spend my time in Korea with two wonderful homestay families: Eun-Jin’s (Guri), and Ju-Yeon’s (Mullae), with whom I developed close relationships. Most of my stay was spent in Guri with Eun-ji’s family, and I had the opportunity to celebrate Chuseok with them, an important holiday in Korea. It was fun to experience how Korean families remember, celebrate, and honor their ancestors. Personally, it was a very uplifting experience. One that I’ll never forget. During my stay in Guri, I met Adeline, a French a student who also had been staying at Eun-Jin’s homestay for a year, so she knew how to get around Seoul without any difficulty and she also could speak Korean. Adeline showed me around Seoul and took me to many fun places such as Myeongdong, Insadong, Namsan Tower, Hanok Village, just to name a few. I had a blast! Also, it was fun spending time with my Korean family and learning about the culture, the language, the customs, learning how to make Korean food, going on hikes, going to museums, Nami Island, visiting historic sites and most of all I will always treasure the love and warmth I received from them during my time in Korea. Visiting Incheon was a unique and memorable adventure. After visiting Grand Park, and Wolmido Island, it was time to try some fresh seafood. It was delicious, but I was scared of the way the raw octopus moved on the plate! Everyone thought it was funny, but I don’t think I will be eating octopus (raw or cooked) any time soon. I love Korea and I love my Korean family, and I ‘m not done yet. I am planning to go back to Korea for a third time very soon. Still there are a lot of places I want to visit, and a few traditional markets I haven’t had the chance to visit yet. Coming to Korea was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I believe it was meant to be and loved every minute of it.
